Chapter 14 in the book “They Say/I Say” was filled with information about ways to decipher what an author has written. It can be challenging as a reader to determine the meaning and the focus behind the author’s work. If a writing doesn’t have an opinion stated clearly in the thesis and throughout the text, then it can be difficult to determine what the author wants you to take from the writing. This chapter helped you to identify certain traits within a piece of writing that can help you to find the author’s intentions. This chapter gave a short sample passage to read, and then it tells you ways that you can analyze the writing. It listed ways that you could get caught and confused. This chapter taught me that understanding the writing doesn’t mean just reading the thesis, but analyzing the thesis and the views behind it.
