Sixteenth Journal
This was a reading that I struggled with more than any of the others in this class. It was not for the lack of an interesting read, but I think I was having trouble connecting with this piece. However, it really made me consider how much I think about the consciousness of other animals. I sat out on Jordan’s Point after last class, and I watched some fish jump out of the water, and I watched the birds gather with their young. Reflecting back on the piece, “What the Crows Know”, I began to think about each of these animals. They all have instincts, and they know how to survive. How much are they aware of beyond this? Are they thinking about me watching them right now? Do they think of me more than just a predator? This piece really made me think about what defines consciousness for these animals, beyond just the simple survival instincts.
