The first chapter of They Say I Say offered a variety of information surrounding writing and how we approach it. What I found most helpful in the chapter was the templates that were provided. The so-called “linguistic formulas” helped me to see new ways of providing information. There were also numerous examples of ways that you can make a critical error in writing. I found that this chapter was extremely informative, which is very helpful. You can think that you are a decent writer, but everyone can benefit from more help, ways to write, and information about ways to change things up. Arguably my favorite part about the first chapter in They Say I Say was the templates. For example, on page 10, there was information about how to disagree in your writing, while not coming off as hostile. There were many example templates provided, such as “While X argues ___, and I argue ___, we can both agree that __.” This will be a great resource to use while writing!
